Large format marble look porcelain installed throughout, transforming a dated main bathroom for a client who trusted us with a second room after seeing what tile can do
After completing a floor to ceiling tile transformation in our Fairfax clients' powder room, we were delighted when they reached out to Grace House Studio again, this time to update their main bathroom.
For this project, the clients wanted to replace the existing subway tile with a more modern porcelain tile that would give the bathroom a fresh, elevated look. Rather than limiting the new tile to select areas, they chose to extend it throughout the bathroom, creating a more cohesive and luxurious feel.
The clients supplied their preferred porcelain tile and commissioned our team to handle the installation. Extending the tile throughout the space added texture and visual interest while giving the bathroom a polished, modern finish.
The result was a dramatic transformation that made the bathroom feel more refined, inviting, and thoughtfully designed. For us, one of the greatest compliments is when a client invites us back into their home for another project. We were grateful for the opportunity to work with our Fairfax clients again and bring their vision for a second bathroom to life.

Design Decisions

Large format marble look porcelain, replacing subway tile with a more dramatic surface
The existing subway tile was functional but reading as dated and visually limited for what the clients wanted the bathroom to become. The marble look porcelain tile they selected is a large format tile with sweeping grey veining on a light ground, a surface that reads as natural stone at scale and gives the bathroom real visual weight. The jump from standard subway tile to a large format marble look is one of the most dramatic single change upgrades available in a bathroom without touching anything structural.

Extended throughout the bathroom, not limited to one feature wall
Tile applied to a single feature wall can look deliberate, but it can also read as a half completed decision. The clients chose to run the porcelain throughout the bathroom, which is the right call for a tile this visually strong. When the same marble look surface covers the full wall plane, the bathroom reads as a room that was designed with this tile in mind rather than a room where tile was added to one section. The sweeping veining movement across adjacent tiles and walls reads as continuous rather than interrupted.

Large format tile, fewer grout lines, more visual continuity
Replacing subway tile with a large format tile reduces the number of grout lines visible across the wall surface significantly. Fewer grout lines means the tile's own veining movement reads as continuous stone across the wall rather than a grid of smaller pieces. In a bathroom this size, that continuity is what gives the room its sense of scale and material quality. The large format is not just an aesthetic preference. It is what makes the marble look tile read as a genuine material rather than a pattern applied to a surface.
