Rochelle: Gray Mist Granite & Whisper White Subway Tile

Dark stone, glossy white tile, and navy cabinetry: a kitchen that balances colour, texture, and function.
As our Rochelle clients neared the completion of their kitchen renovation, the final step was selecting a countertop and backsplash that would complement their beautiful blue cabinetry.
After visiting our showroom and exploring our natural stone selections, they chose Gray Mist Granite paired with our Whisper White Beveled Subway Tile. Gray Mist Granite offers exceptional durability while showcasing a striking blend of dark and light gray tones accented by warmer undertones that create natural movement and depth.
The glossy white beveled subway tile adds brightness, dimension, and visual interest through its reflective finish and subtle three-dimensional profile. Together, these materials created a timeless kitchen design that perfectly balances color, texture, and functionality.
"When the cabinetry is this committed to a palette, the countertop and backsplash have to match that commitment. Not soften it."

Design Decisions
01
Gray Mist granite against navy cabinetry: dark on dark, done right.
The instinct with deep navy cabinetry is to reach for a light countertop. Gray Mist creates tonal layering instead. Its dark and light grey tones occupy a different register than the navy, adding depth rather than flatness. The warm undertones in the stone pick up the gold and amber that natural light draws out of the cabinetry, keeping the room from reading as cold.
02
Whisper White Beveled Subway Tile: the necessary exhale.
With bold choices at both cabinet and countertop, the backsplash needed to give the eye somewhere to rest. The glossy white beveled tile does exactly that: its reflective finish bounces light into the room, its beveled profile adds three-dimensional interest without introducing colour, and its classic format is neutral enough to let the stone and cabinetry remain the room's defining elements.
03
Slab selection, movement chosen for the full counter run.
Gray Mist varies meaningfully between slabs. We selected a piece whose movement runs directionally across the longest counter run so the veining reads as continuous flow rather than scattered pattern. This decision is made at the stone yard with the kitchen layout in hand. Not from a catalogue or a small sample card.
04
Sealing and long-term performance
Gray Mist granite was sealed on installation with a penetrating impregnator. Dark polished granite can show water rings more readily than lighter finishes, which makes the initial sealing and annual maintenance schedule more important, not less. We walked the clients through the water-bead test and the 15-minute annual resealing routine, so the stone will look like this indefinitely.
