Alexandria: Kitchen Build

Alexandria: Kitchen Build

White cabinetry, soft off-white countertops, gold hardware, and black pendants: a bright, modern kitchen built from a blank slate.

For our Alexandria kitchen clients, building their first home was an exciting milestone. After years of living in an apartment with outdated laminate countertops and dark cabinetry that made the space feel closed in and gloomy, they envisioned a kitchen that was bright, airy, and designed for modern living.

The homeowners selected a timeless palette of white, black, and gold to create a space that felt both elegant and welcoming. White cabinetry paired with a soft off-white countertop helped maximize natural light and ensured the kitchen, located at the center of the home's main floor, felt open and inviting.

To add warmth and sophistication, the clients incorporated gold fixtures, cabinet hardware, and decorative accents throughout the space. The design was completed with striking black trumpet pendant lights above the island, creating a beautiful focal point that anchors the kitchen while adding contrast and visual interest.

The finished result is a bright, modern kitchen that perfectly balances style and functionality, providing the ideal gathering space for their first home

"White, black, and gold is one of the most enduring kitchen palettes. It ages well, photographs beautifully, and is almost impossible to tire of."

Design Decisions

01

White cabinetry: the foundation of a bright, open kitchen.

The clients' apartment history was brief: dark cabinetry that made the kitchen feel closed in and gloomy. White Shaker cabinetry was the direct response. It maximises light reflectivity, gives the room an open, airy quality, and provides a neutral foundation that lets every other material decision read clearly. In a kitchen positioned at the centre of the main floor, where it is visible from multiple living areas, a bright cabinet finish pays dividends across the whole home.

02

Soft off-white countertop: light without starkness.

A pure white countertop against white cabinetry can read as flat and undifferentiated. A soft off-white quartz introduces just enough warmth and tone to give the surface its own presence while keeping the room's bright, light-filled character intact. The warm undertone also connects naturally to the gold hardware and fixtures throughout the kitchen, creating a palette that feels considered from floor to ceiling rather than simply white on white.

03

Gold hardware and fixtures: warmth at every touch point.

Gold in a white kitchen is the decision that moves the room from clean to elegant. Specified consistently across cabinet pulls, knobs, faucet, and decorative accents, it functions as the warm thread that runs through the entire space. Consistency is the key. One or two gold elements in a white kitchen can read as accidental; gold at every touch point reads as intentional and gives the room a cohesion that mixed metals never achieve.

04

Black trumpet pendant lights: the focal point that completes the palette.

White and gold alone is warm and elegant but lacks visual punctuation. The black trumpet pendants above the island introduce the contrast that gives the room definition. They anchor the island as the kitchen's social centre and add the vertical interest that a purely horizontal surface composition needs.Black is the one element in this palette that creates genuine tension, which is exactly what makes it work. Without it, the kitchen would be beautiful but forgettable.

05

White, black, and gold: a palette built to last.

The clients chose this palette for their first home, which means it needs to serve them for years, potentially decades. White, black, and gold has proven its longevity across generations of interior design because it is rooted in contrast and warmth rather than trend. It will not date the way a more-of-the-moment palette would, and it will photograph well at every stage of the home's life. For a first home with an uncertain timeline, that durability is as important as the aesthetic itself.
