Our Charlottesville client initially reached out to Grace House Studio looking to replace the existing butcher block countertops in his kitchen with a natural stone that would complement the granite already installed on the kitchen island. He knew he wanted the durability and timeless appeal of natural stone, but also wanted something that felt fresh and suited the style of his home.
After consulting with our team and exploring our selection of granite options, he chose Silver Falls Granite. Sourced from India, Silver Falls features a beautiful blend of light, medium, and dark gray tones, creating natural movement and visual interest throughout each slab. Its polished finish gives the stone a refined look while maintaining the character and uniqueness of natural granite.
The new Silver Falls countertops transformed the kitchen, replacing the butcher block with a more durable and elevated surface while beautifully complementing the existing island. The result is a cohesive, refreshed kitchen that feels both timeless and contemporary.

Design Decisions

Matching to an existing stone, the selection brief that requires the most precision
This project had a constraint that countertop only replacements don't always carry: the perimeter countertop had to work alongside a granite island that was staying in place. That narrowed the field considerably. The new stone couldn't compete with the island's color or movement, couldn't be so similar it looked like an unsuccessful attempt at an exact match, and had to read as part of the same design language. Silver Falls grey and white tonal range complemented the island granite without echoing it directly, which is the right outcome when working with an existing stone in the room.

Silver Falls chosen for its tonal range across light, medium, and dark grey
Silver Falls is not a single grey tone. Its slab has light, medium, and dark grey present across the same surface, which gives the stone visual movement and means it can read alongside other grey stones without clashing. That tonal variation was important here because the island granite had its own character and palette. A flat, uniform grey countertop would have sat awkwardly next to it. Silver Falls' natural movement across the slab created the kind of stone to stone conversation the kitchen needed.

Natural granite over quartz for a kitchen that already spoke in stone
The island was already granite, which set the material language for the room. Introducing quartz on the perimeter would have created a visible difference in how the two surfaces catch and hold light, how they feel underhand, and how they age. Staying within the same material family, natural granite for the perimeter to match the natural granite island, kept the kitchen reading as a single considered decision rather than two separate ones made at different times.

Polished finish, for a surface that holds its own alongside the existing island
A honed or leathered finish on the perimeter would have introduced a visible surface texture difference relative to the island granite, which was polished. Keeping the Silver Falls in a polished finish ensured that both surfaces reflect light in the same way and read as belonging to the same kitchen rather than as stone that was selected at different times for different reasons.
