Fairfax, VA: Powder Room Transformation | Tile Installation

Floor to ceiling light white porcelain tile that made a tight, enclosed powder room feel brighter, more open, and modern — then the clients came back for more

Our Fairfax clients reached out to Grace House Studio looking to refresh their small powder room. The existing colors made the room feel tight and enclosed, so their goal was to create a space that felt brighter, more open, and modern.

To completely transform the room, the clients chose a floor to ceiling tile installation using a light white porcelain tile. Extending the tile from floor to ceiling helped visually open up the space, while the lighter color reflected more light and gave the powder room a fresh, airy feel. The result was a clean, modern transformation that made the small space feel noticeably brighter and more spacious.

One of the best compliments we can receive is the opportunity to work with a client again. After seeing the finished powder room, our clients reached back out to Grace House Studio to bring the same floor to ceiling tile treatment to another bathroom in their home. We were delighted to know they loved the transformation enough to do it all over again.

“The installation is where the tile choice is proven or lost. A great tile poorly installed is a poor result. Getting both right is what makes a client come back.”

Design Decisions

01

Floor to ceiling tile, to visually open a room the paint was closing down

The dark grey painted walls were making an already compact powder room feel smaller and more enclosed than it needed to be. Replacing the painted wall with light white porcelain tile from floor to ceiling reversed that effect on two fronts: the light colour reflected more of the room's available light, and the unbroken vertical tile surface drew the eye upward rather than stopping it at a chair rail or a paint line. In a small room, that vertical draw is the most impactful spatial decision available.

02

Light white porcelain, chosen specifically to maximise brightness

The brief was explicit: the room needed to feel brighter. A darker tile or a heavily patterned tile might have been more visually interesting in isolation, but it would have worked against the goal. Light white porcelain reflects light consistently across every wall surface, which makes the room read as brighter and airier even without changing the fixtures or the lighting. When the brief is brightness, the tile choice has to serve that goal directly.

03

Consistent grout joints, carrying the clean feel across every tile break

A floor to ceiling tile installation in a small room means grout lines are visible from close range across every surface. Consistent, tight grout joints were essential to the clean, modern result the clients were after. Any variation in joint width would have read as careless in a room this compact. The discipline of maintaining consistency through the installation is what separates a result that reads as considered from one that reads as merely tiled.

04

No chair rail break, keeping the vertical read uninterrupted

Stopping the tile at chair rail height is a common choice that introduces a horizontal line which visually lowers the room and breaks the floor to ceiling effect. Going full height without a break keeps the vertical surface reading as continuous, which is precisely what makes the room feel taller and more open than its footprint suggests. The decision to avoid the chair rail was the right one for a brief that was explicitly about making a small room feel larger.
