A compact bathroom converted into a functional, safe, and well considered shower space, completed in three days with minimal disruption to the resident and property team
Grace House Studio recently completed a bathroom renovation for one of our senior living community clients. The project involved converting an existing bathroom into a more functional shower space for a resident while making the most of the room's limited footprint.
Because the space was compact, the layout needed to be simple, practical, and well considered. Our team incorporated a built-in shower niche to provide convenient storage for everyday bath products without taking away from the usable shower area.
The renovation was completed in three days, allowing the resident and property team to return to normal use of the space quickly. The finished bathroom feels clean, comfortable, and functional, with thoughtful details that make better use of the available space.

Design Decisions

Handheld showerhead on an adjustable slide bar, the most functionally important fixture choice
A fixed overhead showerhead in a senior resident's shower is a safety and usability problem waiting to happen. An adjustable slide bar with a handheld showerhead allows the resident to position the spray at the height and angle that works for them, whether standing or seated. It also allows a caregiver to assist with showering without either person having to manage an awkward fixed spray. In a senior living context, this fixture is not a feature upgrade. It is the baseline specification.

Grab bar installed on the shower wall, a safety detail that belongs in every senior bathroom
A brushed nickel grab bar was installed on the shower wall at the right height for a resident entering, exiting, or steadying themselves during use. In a compact shower, where the walls are close and there is no room to recover from a slip, a properly positioned grab bar is the single most impactful safety decision in the room. It was specified and installed here as a standard part of the scope, not as an optional addition.

Pebble mosaic floor tile, chosen for traction over appearance
The shower floor uses pebble mosaic tile in mixed natural tones. In a standard shower, a pebble floor is primarily an aesthetic choice. In a senior resident's shower, it is primarily a safety choice. The irregular pebble surface provides significantly more traction underfoot than a standard large format polished tile, which matters most in wet conditions when the risk of slipping is highest. The visual warmth of the pebble floor is a secondary benefit of a primary safety decision.

Built-in shower niche, keeping product storage inside the shower without adding clutter
A shower caddy or freestanding shelf in a compact senior shower introduces an obstacle and a tripping or catching hazard. The built-in niche recessed into the wall provides storage for the resident's everyday bath products within easy reach, at a height that doesn't require reaching up or bending down, without reducing the usable floor area or adding anything to trip on. In a small shower, built-in storage is the right specification. A niche that blends into the tiled wall is both the cleanest and the safest option.

Large format subway tile on the walls, easy to clean and comfortable to look at
The wall tile is a larger format subway tile in warm white with subtle variation across the surface. For a senior resident who uses this space every day, the tile needed to be easy to clean and easy to maintain without being institutional in feel. Larger format tiles mean fewer grout lines, which means less surface area for mould and soap residue to accumulate. The warm white tone keeps the shower feeling bright and comfortable without the clinical edge that a stark white or heavily patterned tile would introduce.

Three day completion, designed to minimise disruption
A bathroom renovation in a senior living community is not just a construction project. It is a disruption to a resident's daily routine in a context where routine and familiarity matter. The scope was planned and sequenced to be completed in three days, returning the space to full use quickly. That timeline was a design constraint as much as a scheduling goal, and every material and method choice was made with it in mind.
