Frequently Asked Questions

Is cabinet refinishing the same as cabinet painting?

Cabinet refinishing is the broader term. It covers painting, staining, and priming existing cabinets. Painting is the most popular option because it works for any color change and gives a clean, modern look.

What's the difference between refinishing and refacing?

Refinishing keeps your existing doors and boxes and updates the finish. Refacing covers the boxes with veneer and replaces the doors. Grace House Studio offers refinishing and full cabinet replacement, and our designers will recommend the right option during your free in-home consultation.

Are my cabinets good candidates for refinishing?

Solid wood, plywood, and MDF cabinets in good structural condition refinish well. Laminate and thermofoil cabinets don't hold paint reliably, and cabinets with water damage or sagging boxes are usually better replaced.

Can oak cabinets be painted?

Yes. Oak is one of the most common cabinets we refinish in Virginia homes, from Northern Virginia suburbs to older farmhouses around Charlottesville and Culpeper. Grain filling is available if you want a completely smooth painted surface.

Can you stain cabinets a lighter color?

Stain can only go darker or refresh a similar tone. To go from dark wood to white or a light color, painting is the right choice.

How long does cabinet refinishing take?

Most kitchens take about one to two weeks, depending on size, finish, and cabinet condition. Your kitchen stays partly usable during the project.

Why is there a 15-door minimum?

Professional refinishing requires significant prep and setup regardless of project size. The minimum lets us deliver the same quality on every job. Smaller projects are welcome as part of a kitchen or bathroom remodel.

Do you serve Central Virginia?

Yes. We refinish cabinets throughout the Charlottesville to Culpeper corridor, including Madison, Barboursville, and surrounding areas. Our designers come to you for a free in-home consultation, so there's no need to visit the showroom.

Do you refinish bathroom vanities?

Yes, as part of a larger refinishing project or a bathroom remodel. Call (571) 800-7686 or email team@gracehousestudio.com to discuss your project.
